Pitso John Hamilton Mosimane was born on 26 July 1964 in Kagiso, Gauteng, South Africa. He developed an early passion for football, which would later shape his career as both a player and a coach.
Mosimane began his professional playing career in 1982 with Jomo Cosmos, where he made 27 appearances and scored 7 goals. He subsequently played for Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates, and Ionikos in Greece, among other clubs. His playing career included stints at KFC Rita Berlaar in Belgium and Al Sadd in Qatar. He also represented the South Africa national team from 1993 to 1994, earning 4 caps and scoring 1 goal.
Mosimane transitioned into coaching after his playing career, starting as an assistant coach at KFC Rita Berlaar. He returned to South Africa to coach the reserves at Mamelodi Sundowns before becoming the head coach of SuperSport United from 2001 to 2006. During his tenure, he won several trophies, including the Nedbank Cup and the SAA Super Eight Cup.
In July 2010, Mosimane was appointed head coach of the South Africa national team, a position he held until June 2012. His first match in charge was a victory against Ghana. However, the team failed to qualify for the 2012 African Cup of Nations.
Mosimane returned to club management in December 2012 when he took over as head coach of Mamelodi Sundowns. Under his leadership, the club achieved significant success, including winning five ABSA Premiership titles and the CAF Champions League in 2016. He resigned from Sundowns in September 2020.
Following his departure from Sundowns, Mosimane was appointed head coach of Al Ahly in Egypt on 30 September 2020. He became the first non-Egyptian African to manage the club and led them to multiple titles, including two CAF Champions League titles.
After leaving Al Ahly in June 2022, Mosimane managed Al Ahli Jeddah, Al Wahda, and Abha in Saudi Arabia. He was appointed head coach of Esteghlal in Iran in October 2024 but terminated his contract in January 2025.
As of September 2026, Mosimane has been reappointed as the head coach of the South Africa national soccer team, succeeding Hugo Broos. His immediate focus is on preparing the team for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Pitso Mosimane is married to Moira Mosimane, and they have two children, Lelentle and Kopano. He has been recognized for his contributions to football, including receiving an honorary degree from the University of Johannesburg in August 2024 for his impact on sports and leadership.
