Pitso Mosimane has been appointed head coach of Bafana Bafana, confirmed by SAFA on September 1, 2026, replacing Hugo Broos.

Pitso Mosimane has been appointed head coach of Bafana Bafana, confirmed by the South African Football Association (SAFA) on September 1, 2026, replacing Hugo Broos. This marks Mosimane's return to the national team after previously serving from 2010 to 2012.
SAFA president Danny Jordaan announced Mosimane's appointment during a press conference, stating that the decision followed a three-week approval process by the SAFA National Executive Committee (NEC). Mosimane takes over from Broos, who led the team to a historic knockout stage at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the first time South Africa reached this stage in the tournament's history.
Mosimane's immediate focus will be on preparing Bafana Bafana for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. The team is set to begin its campaign with a home match against Guinea, followed by an away game against Eritrea. These matches are crucial as South Africa aims to secure a spot in the tournament, which will be co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.
During his unveiling, Mosimane expressed gratitude for the foundation laid by Broos, acknowledging the progress made under his predecessor. He stated, “Coach Hugo Broos has laid a very good foundation... I appreciate the work he has done with Bafana.” Mosimane also indicated that he would retain many players from the World Cup squad while looking to integrate others who did not have significant playing time.
This appointment marks Mosimane's second permanent tenure as head coach of Bafana Bafana. His first stint ended in 2012 after South Africa failed to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations. Since then, he has built a successful coaching career, winning three CAF Champions League titles and managing clubs in South Africa and the Middle East.
As Mosimane prepares for his upcoming matches, he is also in the process of finalizing his technical staff, which will include Musi Matlaba and Kabelo Rangoaga. The team is expected to convene at the end of September for training ahead of the qualifiers.
Bafana Bafana's first match against Guinea is scheduled for later this month, with the exact date and venue to be confirmed. Following this, they will face Eritrea in early October, setting the stage for a competitive qualifying campaign.
