Hugo Broos was born on 10 April 1952 in Humbeek, Belgium. He began his football career at a local club, KFC Humbeek, before being scouted by RSC Anderlecht at the age of eighteen.

Playing Career

Broos had a distinguished playing career primarily as a central defender. He played for RSC Anderlecht from 1970 to 1983, making 350 appearances and scoring 1 goal. During his time at Anderlecht, he contributed to the team's success in winning three European trophies, three national championships, and four Belgian Cups. He later transferred to Club Brugge, where he played from 1983 to 1988, making 161 appearances and scoring another goal. He retired from professional football in 1988.

On the international stage, Broos represented Belgium from 1974 to 1986, earning 24 caps and participating in the 1986 FIFA World Cup, where Belgium finished in fourth place.

Managerial Career

Broos transitioned to coaching shortly after retiring as a player. His managerial career began in 1988 with RWD Molenbeek, where he served until 1991. He then took over at Club Brugge from 1991 to 1997, achieving considerable success, including two league titles and three Belgian Cups.
