Early Life and Education

Ivan Glasenberg was born on 7 January 1957 in Johannesburg, South Africa, to a Jewish family. His father, Samuel Glasenberg, was a luggage manufacturer and importer originally from Lithuania, while his mother, Blanche Vilensky, was South African. Glasenberg grew up in the suburb of Illovo and attended Hyde Park High School. He was an accomplished athlete, becoming a national junior champion in race walking by his early twenties.

He graduated from the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa, earning a Bachelor of Commerce and a Bachelor of Accountancy. Following his undergraduate studies, Glasenberg worked for five years at Nexia Levitt Kirson, a firm of chartered accountants, where he qualified as a Chartered Accountant (CA(SA)). He later obtained a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Southern California in 1983.

Career

Glasenberg joined Glencore in 1984, initially working in the coal department in South Africa. He spent two years in Australia as head of the Asian coal commodity division before moving to Hong Kong and Beijing, where he managed the company's operations in those regions from 1988 to 1990. In 1990, he became responsible for Glencore's worldwide coal business, overseeing both marketing and industrial assets.

In 2002, Glasenberg was appointed Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Glencore. Under his leadership, the company grew to become one of the largest commodity trading and mining firms globally. He played a significant role in the merger between Glencore and Xstrata in 2013, which created a company valued at approximately $88 billion.

Glasenberg's tenure at Glencore was marked by significant financial growth, and he was known for his strategic investments and management style. He retired from his position as CEO in 2021 after nearly two decades in the role.

Ownership and Investments
