President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed Leonard Lekgetho as the permanent head of the Special Investigating Unit (SIU), effective September 1, 2026.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed Leonard Lekgetho as the permanent head of the Special Investigating Unit (SIU), effective September 1, 2026. This decision follows Lekgetho's tenure as acting head since February 2026, after Advocate Andy Mothibi left the position to become the National Director of Public Prosecutions.
Vincent Magwenya, the presidential spokesperson, confirmed the appointment, stating that it aims to secure the stability of the SIU and enhance its ongoing impact in the fight against crime. The appointment was made in accordance with section 3(1)(a) of the Special Investigating Units and Special Tribunals Act of 1996.
Lekgetho brings over 19 years of experience within the SIU, having joined the unit in 2007. Throughout his career, he has held various roles, including Chief Operations Officer, Chief Forensic Investigator, and Project Manager. His extensive background includes involvement in high-profile corruption investigations and forensic audits. Prior to his work with the SIU, he served as an investigator in the now-defunct Directorate of Special Operations.
In terms of qualifications, Lekgetho holds degrees in law, education, and science, along with a diploma in forensic auditing and a postgraduate diploma in cyber law. Magwenya expressed confidence in Lekgetho's leadership, emphasizing the critical role of the SIU in the criminal justice system's efforts against corruption.
The SIU is an independent statutory body tasked with investigating serious allegations of corruption, malpractice, and maladministration within state institutions, as well as recovering financial losses through civil litigation. The unit is empowered to take civil action to address any wrongdoing identified during its investigations.
As Lekgetho assumes his new role, he is expected to continue the SIU's mandate of safeguarding public interests and enhancing accountability within government operations.
