The Bank of Africa Group (BOA Group) was founded in 1982 in Mali as an independent African bank, supported by diverse private investors. It expanded with the creation of Bank of Africa – Benin in 1989 and later established a holding company, African Financial Holding (AFH), which became BOA Group S.A. The bank further extended its presence in Niger (1994), Côte d’Ivoire (1996), and Burkina Faso (1998).
Between 1999 and 2010, BOA Group diversified its operations, transforming into a structured financial group. It expanded beyond commercial banking into asset management and insurance while entering new regions such as Madagascar (1999), Kenya (2004), Uganda (2006), Tanzania (2007), and the Democratic Republic of Congo (2010). It also launched an investment company, BOA-France, and a housing finance bank in Benin.
In 2008, BOA Group partnered with Banque Marocaine du Commerce Extérieur (BMCE Bank), which acquired a 35% stake, later increasing to 65.23% by 2012. This partnership strengthened BOA's financial and operational capacity, allowing further growth and expansion.
