Tshwane Police Officer Peter Nonyane and attorney Charlotte Tibana face fraud charges for allegedly stealing R1.75 million from deceased estates in Polokwane. The couple appeared in the Polokwane Magistrates' Court for a bail application following their arrest in connection with the alleged theft and laundering of funds from the estates of deceased individuals.
Nonyane, a 36-year-old officer with the Tshwane Metropolitan Police Department, and his 33-year-old wife, Tibana, are accused of defrauding three deceased estates of over R4 million between 2024 and 2026. The charges include fraud, theft, and money laundering. The prosecution alleges that approximately R1.65 million of the stolen funds was used to purchase a used Mercedes-Benz AMG G63.
The couple was arrested during a joint operation by various law enforcement agencies. Nonyane was apprehended on August 14, 2026, in Pretoria, while Tibana surrendered to authorities on August 17, 2026. Their bail hearing was postponed to August 24, 2026, as they remain in custody.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Tibana, acting as the executor of the estates, is alleged to have facilitated the unlawful transfer of funds. The State claims that the transactions not only concealed the source and movement of the funds but also deprived the rightful beneficiaries of their inheritances. The NPA has emphasized its commitment to prosecuting financial crimes that undermine public trust and harm beneficiaries entitled to estate assets.
During the bail application, both Nonyane and Tibana argued for their release, citing personal circumstances and their cooperation with law enforcement. Tibana stated that she has two young children and is employed, while Nonyane highlighted his permanent residency and family ties in South Africa.
The case has drawn attention due to the high-profile nature of the accused, with Nonyane also known for his social media presence. The court proceedings continue as the investigation remains ongoing, with the next hearing scheduled to further address the bail application and the charges against the couple.
